Have you ever thought about being an entrepreneur? When I started my company, I certainly didn’t. From my upbringing, regular people got regular jobs that paid regular wages. Entrepreneur was just another word for the “wild years,” the floaters and the uncommitted.
Yet, having been called one for a while now, I believe that everyone is actually born an entrepreneur: we just get talked out of it early on in life. At its heart, entrepreneurship isn’t about the fundraising, the team building, and the million dollar exits we read about. The media likes to write about these things, but they are the details from the outside looking in. At its heart, entrepreneurship is about having a hopeful perspective and maintaining a sense of agency for the world no matter the odds. As entrepreneurs, when we see the world burning, we don’t say “Screw it, we are done.” Instead, we say “Screw it, we are going to change this.”
So if you’ve ever wondered if entrepreneurship is for you, here is something that might help you decide. Don’t think about the details. Think simpler for now. Can you see a vision of the world that is better than the world we have today, and will you be willing to lead us there? If you are willing, then perhaps it is your time to become an entrepreneur too.
